I love this kind of bittersweet ode to the recliner. Your alternatives are much chicer of course but I do appreciate a recliner at times (in *other* people’s homes)

I know! I bet recliner sales skyrocketed after those episodes of "Friends." They are amazingly comfortable.

When I moved from a house to my aging friend’s over-crowded condo, so my husband and I could take care of my “second mom,” I fell in love with her green velvet wingback chair and substantial ottoman. The set had lovely curved wood legs. Unfortunately, I discovered the hefty beauty under her storage/“just leave all that alone, Honey” pile after she passed. I so enjoyed collapsing in it, and putting my feet up, on those last days exhausting, sad days helping the family clear her items. I’d kind of curl in and nap with my head on one of the wings.

I hated letting it go. I almost took it to my next place but I didn’t have the room. I sure miss it.

I can picture you and your mom sharing her chair. It made me I imagine having had that moment with my friend, too. Thank you for giving me the sweet image.

I'll never forget it and really liked the chair better after that. But green velvet? Wingback? Sounds really nice. Thanks for sharing!

My good friend, Jack Danger, has two -- one in the middle of the living room positioned for reading and another in the family room positioned in front of the big screen. He has asked me to help him with his decor but I explained to him that it was impossible until he is willing to lose the recliners. Right now we're at a stand-off!

Great ideas for small spaces where we always want comfortable seating, size matters too!

Everything in my home needs to be beautiful AND functional--except the marshmallow chair. It's a big, off white, power-lift recliner. I bought it when I was going to have surgery a few years ago and wouldn't be able to sleep horizontally for 6 weeks or so. It got me through that recovery and then 2 others. It's hideous. It's the only item in the entire house that is truly ugly--too big, too puffy, weird color, it screams hideousness. And yet, I won't part with it. I'm sitting in it now as a matter of fact. It's so comfortable I'll forgive all it's visual shortcomings. It's tucked away (as best as something this huge can be tucked away) in my office.

I hear you haha! And you are fortunate to have a more discreet room in which to "tuck" it. My friend also reminded me that these recliners can literally help people avoid longer hospital or skilled nursing visits. So I felt bad trashing them ... but they are ugly.

Hey, ugly is ugly. I am always reminded of Frasier's father's chair on that TV show and how it stuck out like a sore thumb in that lovely decor. That's my marshmallow chair without the plaid!
